Financial Abuse
In most cases of abuse, financial abuse is also present, which can make it more difficult for someone to leave or to start building a new life.
This could look like an abuser:
Blocking access to money or assets
Sabotaging employment opportunities
Denying direct access to bank accounts
Making it difficult for someone to go to school
Ruining someone’s credit, running up large debts on joint account
Refusing to pay bills that are in the survivors name
Survivors are often faced with questions like:
If we leave, where will we live?
How will I provide for the kids on my own?
How will I manage or pay for childcare when I’m working?
How can I get a lease when my abuser has ruined my credit?
How can I afford to go to school so I can get a better job?
These are difficult situations to navigate. It is possible to exit abusive situations, and to build a new life after abuse. Your gifts provide a space for survivors to be in community with others who intimately understand what they are going through. It’s a place full of resources, encouragement, education, validation and HOPE.
Thank you for paving the way to futures without violence!
